New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging
Undergraduate Geriatrics Education
Students are exposed to geriatrics throughout their medical school education through our partnership with nationally-recognized Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (Rowan-Virtua SOM). Our pre-clerkship students learn about Geriatric Medicine during the Lifespan course and participate in a two-week intercession focused on Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. During clerkship, we offer a four-week clinical rotation during which students care for geriatric patients in settings across the continuum of care: ambulatory clinic, acute care, long-term care, Program of All-inclusive Care of the Elderly (PACE), and hospice.
More information on geriatrics at Rowan-Virtua SOM is available in our curriculum section.
Resident Rotations
As the population ages, as much as 75% of a physician’s time will be spent caring for older adults. Virtua Health and NJISA prepare residents to meet the unique needs of patients aged 65 and older with specialized training and dedicated rotations. Opportunities to experience geriatrics during residency is available through the following specializations:
- Family Medicine
- Internal Medicine
- General Psychiatry
You can learn more about residency opportunities by visiting the Graduate Medical Education pages on the SOM site.
